Marcian reversed many of the policies of Theodosius II, especially those concerning the Huns under Attila and religious affairs. While Attila was invading Italy in 452, Marcian launched campaigns across the Danube into the Great Hungarian Plain, defeating the Huns in their own territory.
Through his mother, he was a cousin of Emperor Julian, as both shared Julius Julianus as their maternal grandfather. His first wife was probably Artemisia. The fifth-century general Procopius and his son, Emperor Anthemius, were among his descendants.
